Water Ghost 2
Dear FIT
Q.We have a dripping sound in the attic, but all of our pipes are under the bathroom floor. It seems to be right where the vent goes from the bathroom to the attic and then through the roof. There are no signs of leaks under the bathroom fixtures or on lower level ceilings. We only hear the drip when we’ve run water in the sink for a while. Could something be obstructing the vent pipe and causing condensation to drip in the vent pipe?
Kathy
Hello Kathy,
A.Chances are good that you don't have a leak. Under your lavatory they must have dirty armed from the lavatory drain line, meaning they ran the lavatory drain line over-tying it into the toilet drain instead of dropping the lavatory drain line straight down. When you do this, lavatory water, when in use, will drain over to the toilet and since sound carries, you hear the drip, drip, drip sound. Also keep in mind that in the winter months the warm sewer gases are escaping,
mixing with the cold temperatures outdoors, causing condensation. This condensation drips back down the pipe and bingo the water ghost is revealed. You probably do not have an obstruction in the vent pipe. Chances are good that your toilet would start backing up, with the possible smell of sewer gases as well, as the gases could not vent.
